The August Förster principle is founded on maintaining our 160-year tradition of craftsmanship and meeting the highest individual standards of quality. August Förster is one of the few companies in the world where nearly everything is made by hand. We use only the finest materials. The legs, music desks, and lyres for the pedals are elaborately carved from wood. The back frames of the grand pianos feature a radial construction, while the various components are joined exclusively with wooden dowels. The soundboards are carved from tonewood and are ribbed, adjusted, and installed by professionals. The bass strings are wound by hand, and the cast-iron plates are all drilled, sanded, filled, and coated manually. Each instrument is an individual work of art, with the finishing touches made by our voicing experts. They are specialists with decades of experience who lend each instrument its unmistakable August Förster sound.
Currently, August Förster employs a staff of 37 people who produce approximately 80 grand pianos and 120 upright pianos every year. Customers and interested parties have the opportunity to take a tour of our production facilities, to see us hand-crafting the instruments in person. For many of our customers, this chance to witness the creation of “their instrument” is an increasingly vital aspect of the process.
